Rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are a great way to kick the disposable battery habit and save money and well as the environment. To me, the best NiMH batteries are the Sanyo Eneloop with Hybrio batteries a close second. Both use the new NiMH hybrid technology.
The problem before this new technology was that regular NiMH batteries discharge while in storage; to the tune of about one percent per day. After a month they’re at 73 percent capacity and by six months they can have as little as 14 percent charge! This means users have found keeping them charged to be tedious, and find it’s inconvenient to have to recharge the batteries before using them.
The new hybrid technology takes advantage of rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and adds the benefit of holding a charge much longer. This means on delivery they’re pre-charged and ready to go. Not only do they self-discharge very slowly in storage, after six months they’re still 90 percent charged, they’re also extremely cost-effective because they can be charged around 1,000 times.
Also unlike regular NiMH, these hybrid batteries can be recharged in any good-quality battery charger. It is a good idea though to buy a smart charger to protect your batteries from overcharging.) Testing has determined that the Eneloop batteries do last much longer than older rechargeable batteries.
The one drawback to the hybrid batteries though is their capacity is less than regular rechargeable. This means they may not have the runtime you need for a digital camera especially if you use the flash. We have some recommendations for rechargeable NiMH batteries for your digital camera or if you want to skip the choosing between regular and hybrid you can go with disposable Energizer e2 Lithium batteries for your camera.
The other cool thing with rechargeable NiMH batteries is that there are USB and solar battery chargers so you can take them on the road with you without having to hassle with separate chargers for all your electronic devices.
